Surfers for Cetaceans (S4C) is a voice for the international community of surfers, all of whom, without exception, are the friend of whales and dolphins and who, in a shared love of the ocean, see cetaceans as family - as next of kin.
S4C therefore is opposed to killing or mistreatment of whales and dolphins and calls on all those involved in such to turn away from creating such unnecessary suffering and instead to cherish and celebrate Whale Nation by protecting cetaceans, their home seas and their migrations.
Great opportunity exists for Japan , Norway and Iceland to relinquish whaling to fully embrace the burgeoning global whale watch industry and to raise the status of cetaceans in their respective seas. For example, the Sea of Japan Minke whale, the Bairds beaked whale and the Dall’s porpoise would all become wonderful conservation icons of Japan .
S4C asks that Japan abandon its pelagic whaling expeditions and call off plans to kill protected and much loved South Pacific humpback whales, along with fin and minke whales in the Antarctic.
As surfers and sailors we welcome the annual migration of the Australian and Tongan humpbacks and celebrate more and more known individuals including the famous mothers of the migration.
Japanese, Norwegian and Icelandic tourists who have met cetaceans around the world through whale watching, diving and surfing have also been touched by the truly benevolent and intelligent nature of whales and dolphins and wish, in heartfelt compassion, to see them safeguarded and respected.
Innately, we humans know that marine mammals are people of the sea; whales are an ancient and noble race deserving of our respect and in light of their collective suffering at our hand, our apologies.
It is high time for the international community to honour being in the company of these “international living treasures”, accord them their freedom, and enjoy into the future a peaceable and joyful interaction with cetaceans - an experience treasured by all surfers.
